Portfolio of Works
Abstract Expressions
Feeling a shift in focus from mimetic work to a more intuitive approach to painting has brought me to discover drawing again. Calligraphic strokes combine with hand printed papers, paint and other collage elements.I start with an idea. I find the right color choice and then intuitive shape and placement takes center stage. The works in this collection represent a refresh button I pushed in January 2022. I am pleased with my new creations. Come see.

Anthem or Elegy? Red White and Blue series
Art does not exist in a vacuum. It is always influenced by politics, society, the artist's private life and so on.
Henri Matisse said that "Creativity takes courage." It does. Because creatives are always being criticized. Sometime they are spurned, sometimes persecuted, and on occasion, celebrated.
I have begun a series in red, white and blue. They have become my own meditations of the ongoing tragedies facing our country and world today. In the making of these abstracts,I began to ponder our upcoming celebration of 250 years as a democratic republic. How could one avoid this timely event and all the complications and implications surrounding it?
As I painted, my mind naturally went off into what constitutes the freedom we will celebrate in these United States? What are the pieces we bring to the fabric of the whole of our country? How do we repair the torn and the desecrated? How does the future look to me as I create in my comfortable cocoon of a studio? How do I reconcile the present with what my lived experience has been? My efforts, while aspiring to elegance of presentation, sometime fail that mission. However, they are a personal visual meditation on bearing witness to a world in extreme change.
Not So Black and White Series
This series explores the beauty found in contrast. Black and white meet, merge, and reveal unexpected layers of emotion and texture. Each 8x8 work on paper offers a glimpse into the subtle spaces between clarity and ambiguity, boldness and calm. Small in scale yet visually powerful, these original pieces make collecting art both personal and accessible. Perfect for starting—or expanding—a collection with work that speaks quietly, yet with undeniable presence.
Landscapes
Painting the landscape has been my mainstay, especially since moving to western North Carolina. There are many weather patterns to observe, inhabit and enjoy. I use cold wax medium with my oil paints to help with the transparent glazing which adds depth to the works. My supports are usually cradled wooden panels.
Unless I have stated that the work was done en plein air(outdoors on location),these works in oil on canvas or wood panel or pastel on paper were completed in the solitude of my home studio. I work from small outdoor sketches in pastel or my own photo references, then elaborate or simplify.

Botanical
Nature, especially the spring and summer garden is a sensual delight. I try to capture the color and movement of those seasons with my favorite colors from my own garden. Making these paintings are joyful.
I hope that resonates with my collectors and viewers alike.
